DIASPORA

DIASPORA

The word (diaspora) itself is used to define any people that are living outside of their original homeland, often living in close proximity to one another in order to maintain, preserve and share their culture. In a sense this was the overarching theme when tasked with creating an editorial piece of my choosing. At its core, Diaspora is a magazine about people; a literary museum of ethnic backgrounds from around the world building curiosity in people, preserving cultures, educating readers, and sharing the similarities we as people have with one another. The art direction gives voice through a non-traditional and contemporary lens, one that induces curiosity through a whimsical, yet rustic sense of nostalgia for the human spirit. All of which is achieved through photography that  is gentle and elegant, with a typographic grid that gives space for cultures to pop off the page.

To be spread or dispersed from one’s original homeland.

What is the meaning of diaspora?

Tales from Yan Ming Shan — Writing & photography by Zoran Jovicic

Research of various cultures, and searching for inspiration through iconic magazines such as TWEN, Kinfolk, Avant Garde, and Fact, went into creating a visual identity that maintained a classic look and feel that when paired with the right photography would allow content to breathe on each page. While some source photography had been used, much of the images included were self-shot or art directed by myself – In addition, traditional wardrobe was sourced from a local cultural centers where further discussions were held with an ethnographic choreographer to ensure that the clothing was represented correctly and worn in the appropriate manner.
